DJ Nick Fusion

Tier 1

Nick Fusion has become a household name in the music industry over the last 14 years. After moving from Durban to Johannesburg in 1997, he became a student at RAU majoring in BCom Accounting. He quickly became bored with it and turned his attention to the nightlife scene as many students tend to do. He became involved with Morgan’s Cat as a Light Jockey after the then resident DJ, Nico Pieterse initiated it. On many nights, Nick was asked to play a song or 2 while the inhouse DJ’s took breaks etc, and the bug bit. Nick was hooked on how 1 person could be in control of a entire mass of people, and started thinking that he could do it as well.

After combining the power he experienced with moving the masses with a push of a button, with his passion for music, Nick decided he was going to pursue a career in Professional DeeJaying. He started his career with a bang, and although he was not near as professional as some of the big names that rocked dancefloors in the late 90’s, his music selection was impeccable and thus led to having as much as 4 residencies at 4 different clubs on 5 nights weekly. Nick was a a resident DJ at clubs such as Punter’s and Trouserleg, Foundation Cafe, Roxy’s in Melville and Morgan’s Cat at the same time. At this point in his career, it was about what music you played and Nick did not care much for beatmatching. He was more a DJ that played good music rather than show his skills on how he put the music together. This approach was short lived, as shortly after the millenium came and went, Nick picked up 3 more residencies. He was now doing multiple sets at various clubs on the same night, and so his name began reaching clubbers city wide in Johannesburg. Known as DJ Nick back then, he quickly found out that serious clubbers wanted more than just playing amazing music.... they wanted it to be mixed like the Professionals as well!!!

Keeping his residency at Morgan’s Cat, and saying goodbye to the student life in 2001, Nick took his Djing to another level. Nick approached various clubs and soon got a midweek slot at clubs such as Club Ibiza in Midrand, Studio 88 as well as his biggest break in his career, just 5 short years after he began DJing full time. He got the Head DJ slot at the illustrious Therapy nightclub, heading up the Purple Fly dancefloor, as well as playing a weekly Thursday night set at G.A.S.S. in the Heartland as well. This is when the flood gates opened. Nick got oppertunities to show off his skills at various different venues, including Industry cafe in Rivonia, Catch 22 and 96degrees in Rosebank, and Funky Town in Midrand as well as Who’s Zoo in Fourways.

In 2002, Nick teamed up with Morgan’s Cats 1st resident DJ, Nico Pieterse, and was offered a job at La Toscana, Montecasino’s premier function venue. Being the Assistant Technical Manager, Nick was also djing at all the functions that Montecasino received, as well as DJing at Sasa’s, Montecasino’s cocktail bar. Nick also snagged a Saturday night bi weekly residency at The Venue in Rivonia. Upon the opening of Vacca Matta in 2002, Sergio Zurini offered Nick a residency alongside Shawny B. Nick grabbed the oppertunity, and quickly found himself DJing in different areas of music entertainment. He was Djing at Function Venues, Nightclubs, Bars, Cocktail lounges as well as doing outsourced functions such as weddings and house parties. He became too busy and needed to slow things down. Resigning at Sasa’s and Morgan’s Cat in 2002, Nick held his DJ residencies at Vacca Matta, La Toscana as well as Therapy nightclub. In 2002, DJ Nick also had his 1st ever international DJ Set, a 72hr Gay Pride festival in Grande Baie, Mauritius.

In 2003, Therapy nightclub decided to close its doors, and this resulted in a roof top party where Nick played alongside fellow residents DJ Ice and Jacques for 6000 people overlooking the streets of Jorrisen and De Korte in Braamfontein. Nick also resigned at Industry in Rivonia, and turned his full time attention to technical management at La Toscana,Montecasino. He quickly became bored without the club atmosphere, but at the same time strengthened his abilities in production through sound engineering, lighting direction and all round technical management al La Toscana in Montecasino. Michael Bender opened Barouge Nightclub in 2003, and approached Nick to be the Head DJ. Nick grabbed the oppertunity and was once again, rocking dancefloors in Johannesburg. A flood of special sets at FTV’s, News Cafe’s put Nick on the sought after list once more to rock dancefloors for the masses.

Throughout 2004 - 2008, Nick continued to rock dancefloors at various venues for different types of functions, from Corporate year end functions, to fashion shows, nightclub residencies as well as guest sets at top events including Hangar 57, Blackbook USA top 18 Nightclubs held at Movida, Sunninghill and the Mercedes Benz World Dealership Awards evening at the Arabella Country Golf Estate in Kleinmondt, Cape Town. An agent from the United Kingdom heard Nick’s skill and approached him to DJ in Europe during December 2008.

After opening exclusive venues such as Movida nightclub in Sunninghill, and Central Grill Cocktail house in 2008, Nick still worked at La Toscana in Montecasino as a Senior Technical Manager. Nick was DJing at various different venues and tackled London & Amsterdam during December 2008. Playing at top nightclubs in these 2 cities for 2 weeks, Nick rocked dancefloors alongside top names like Sander Kleinenberg, David Guetta, Bob Sinclar and Gareth Emery to name but a few. His skill was quickly noticed and he was invited back for another Europe tour in 2009, this time Paris was included. Playing alongside Martin Solveig and DJ Chuckie in Paris and Amsterdam, only lifted his desire to do more. His London tour in 2009 saw his biggest break in his international career to date, playing a 3 hour back 2 back set with Dj Colleen Shannon and Dave Darell at the exclusive Ministry Of Sound in Elephant & Castle, London. He teamed up with Way Out West and headlined Winter Wonderland at Pacha in London, leading up to the main attraction for the evening, The worlds number 1 DJ, Armin Van Buuren!!

In 2010, DJ Nick resigned as Senior Technical Manager at Montecasino, and started up his own Production Company, Quattro Productions. As Managing Director of Quattro Productions, Nick provides DJ’s as well as equipment to venues such as Movida and Central Grill, @Monte Winebar in Montecasino, BuddhaTa in Design Quarter, and Cubana and News Cafe in Pretoria. In June 2010, Nick was providing 12 DJs on a nightly basis to various different venues during the Fifa World Cup held in South Africa. Thus saw Nick working alongside top local acts such as Sasha Martinengo, DJ Fresh, Gareth Cliff to name but a few.

During Spring 2010 Dj Nick, after direction from his agent in London, was told to drop the DJ title, and thus Nick Fusion was born. Travelling under a new name and logo, a disastrous start due to inclement weather conditions in Europe in December 2010, saw his tour get postponed to May 2011. Nick returned and started his 1st official set as Nick Fusion at the NYE party at Central Grill in Cedar Square. Nick took the crowd from 9pm to a record 6am closure, seeing more than 300 people leave at sunrise!!

Thus, Nick Fusion saw 2011 in with a bang...... a new name, a new logo, and new direction. After a successful tour of Europe in May 2011, Nick Fusion turned his sights to his Production Company during winter 2011 in South Africa, and has seen massive results.

Nick Fusion has also decided to team up with DJ Paul Angel, Movida Nightclubs resident DJ, to form a well established DJ duo called ‘The Saints’ during 2011.

Nick Fusion, spearheading Quattro Productions as a Managing Director, is highly motivated towards the latter part of 2011, to do even bigger things in the future, and 2012 sees this dynamic DJ having tours lined up in Miami , New York and Los Angeles in the United States, as well as returning to London, Paris and Amsterdam in the winter of 2012. Nick Fusion still resides with his career long motto that he does not want to be the best, he wants to be one of them.
